Public bug reported:
Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu)
Severity: Normal
Priority: (none set)
Status: Unconfirmed
Description:
This might be an upstream issue, but:
I have a serial HP-DeskWriter 510 connected to /dev/ttyS0, and I cannot
add it via gnome-cups-add. (Even worse, if I manually setup a working
printers.conf, something in the dialog sometimes manages to mess up, so
that printing stops working for me.) As far as I can tell, there are two
problems:
- cupsys does not have (a link to) 'serial' in /usr/lib/cups/backend/, so that
the serial ports don't show up in the Select Port dialog's list of local
ports. Note that not having this backend prevents me from using serial printers
with cups altogether, so I will file a separate bug against cupsys.
- If I add a symlink to the serial backend, I get a load of serial ports
in the Select Port dialog, but no opportunity to specify the baudrate/
flowcontrol/ parity parameters.
The fix IMHO would be to add a single 'Serial Port' item in the dialog's
list of local ports, and if that is selected, present a further dialog
for the device node and parameters.
