** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager
+ Binary package hint: volume-control

It is unfortunately common for applications to crash locking up the alsa
sound system preventing sounds functioning
(recreateable in all distributions by forceably terminating an active xine
application)
  In my case common culprits
  Totem
  Firefox+Flash
  Amarok and Xine based players.

As an experienced user i know restarting alsa will resolve this
however for a novice user this is a difficult task possibly requiring a full
reboot.

the addition of a object on the context menu of the volume control entitled
"Restart Sound System (ALSA)" (Attached)
  or similar
  with the attached action
  `gksu /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart`

  could become a potent resolution.

Addition of this button to the Volume Control Application could be
  beneficial also.
