This appears in the terminal window when starting with sudo:

When starting from the applications menu gThumb locks but I can force the
program to end. But when I do an other try Ubuntu locks up and can not be
closed and the PC has to be reset.
gTumb has the same behavior after reinstalling it with Synaptic. I did things
like mentioned in Bug #227293:
rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/gthumb ~/.gnome2/gthumb and after that: sudo chown -R $USER
$HOME without result.
