Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: metacity
I have recently installed 8.04 on my laptop. I login to this machine in two
different ways.
- Directly logging in and using laptop's keyboard and touchpad.
- Through another linux machine using X forwarding over SSH so that I use the
keyboard and mouse attached to the second machine. In this case I usually run
this script for creating gnome-session
ssh -A -T -X -n laptop /etc/X11/Xsession
Using gconf-editor I have created the following key bindings on my laptop under
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings
run_command_1 <Ctrl><Shift>q
run_command_2 <Ctrl><Shift>w
run_command_3 <Ctrl><Shift>e
Similarly I have created the corresponding commands
command_1 gvim
command_2 firefox
command_3 gnome-terminal
The funny thing is that when I am directly using the laptop (means its
keyboard) <Shift>q launches gvim, <shift>w launches firefox and so on i.e. I
don't have to press the <Ctrl> key at all !!!! This is causing lots of problems
as I cannot type Caps by using Shift key alone. I have to use Caps lock key
which is rather annoying. The funny part is that when I am using the laptop
over the SSH connection is described above, the keybindings work as they
should. <Ctrl> key is indeed needed in that case for triggering the
keybindings.
I can't believe that there is anything wrong with the control key on the
laptop's keyboard since the keys work perfectly fine when I boot it in
windows. May be I have set some settings incorrectly or maybe this is a
bug.
If you need any more information please let me know.
