I can't reproduce this issue (gedit, totem start fine from deskbar-applet).
What steps do you need to take to reproduce the issue? Also, try logging out
and back in again if you haven't already.
Please report a separate bug for your nvidia issue; other than that, an
excellent first bug report :)
