The upgrade I was referring to was the upgrade to 2.6.24-17.
Once I discovered the problem I rebooted and used the 2.6.24-16 kernel with the
same result.
So it may well be that the upgrade to the 2.6.24-17 changed the check box "Hide
visual feedback..".
I can not recall changing it myself.
In the mean time I upgraded to 2.6.24-18 also and the problem did not occur.

I performed the upgrade to 2.6.24-18 myself, but was not able to
reproduce the problem. I will change the status from Incomplete -> New
so somebody else can confirm the bug. Good luck.
