Please note that there is a more deep reasoning in this. If the power button 
action will be _exactly the same_ as clicking System>Log Out or using the Log 
Out applet, and will _require_ the user to reach the keyboard/mouse to confirm 
(that's the key point), there is _no point_ in giving the power button an 
action, because _there is no gain in using the power button as compared to just 
using the mouse from the beginning_. You might as well have the button do 
nothing by default. 

I vote for giving the gconf key moreati has pointed out a simple interface in 
the gnome-power-preferences dialog. Something like "Power button action": 
shutdown immediately, shutdown with countdown (like the LogOut applet), ask 
(bring out the Log Out dialog), do nothing. This would be more consistent and 
make us all happy. (And then we could argue endlessly about what the default 
behavior should be :)).
