I've seen this before and it happened again. The trash function works
properly, including trash icon in Nautilus places. This time I deleted
all thumbnails using nautilus by selecting them all with CtrlA and using
the Delete key. They appeared in trash. When I booted the next day I
noticed I hadn't empied the trash so I use the trash applet to do so. It
still says 853 items in trash. I double checked home and root trash
which are both empty. I deleted more files and emptied trash again. Note
than when deleting files the reported number of trash items didn't
change. The only way to clear the problem I could find was to remove the
trash icon and add it back.
