Public bug reported:

Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In the GDM menu there's an option that allows the user to change the
properties of the Login Manager. When you click on that menu option, the
user is requested a password, which I believe is the root password.

Because Ubuntu has the root account "disabled", the password check will
always fail. I propose that the configuration menu option is removed
because with a default installation the window it gives access to is
never accessible.
