I would suggest to mark the number of mails in the folder as it is now but 
without highlightening it in bold.

Bold is the metaphor for "unread", IMHO.

So, simply removing bold would be perfect.

I admit that this is not critical at all and we can just say : "users will 
learn". It's just not perfect ;-)
