Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

I set up the Gnome keyboard applet with two layouts - United Kingdom
(GBr) and Malta (Mlt), with GBr as default.

Initially this works fine, but after I reboot, if I switch to the
Maltese keyboard layout via the applet, the keyboard generates all weird
characters.

I discovered that the characters being generated are as if the "third
level modifier" is on - but I have no third level modifier key defined
in the options. If I remove the Maltese layout and re-add it, it works
ok again until the next reboot. Also, if I use the command "setxkbmap
mt" it also works correctly... but then the keyboard applet freaks out
and refuses to switch layouts after that.

$ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
        xkb_keycodes  { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)"       };
        xkb_types     { include "complete"      };
        xkb_compat    { include "complete"      };
        xkb_symbols   { include
"pc+gb+mt:2+level3(ralt_switch_for_alts_toggle):1+level3(ralt_switch_for_alts_toggle):2+group(alts_toggle)"

};
