Same problem here. Installed Ubuntu 6.06 and could use all fonts in Gnome font 
chooser. After doing the first 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' i've found the same 
problem. In the font chooser, only sans, serif and monospace fonts are usable. 
Apps like GIMP, OO, Firefox or Thunderbird do not have the problem, but GVIM 
and all Gnome apps do have it.

I tried downgrading fontconfig and restoring /etc/fonts without success.
