for some reason the system - preferences - keyboard applet changed
behaviour:
keyboard preferences change active after restart of an application. this
includes the keyboard applet. so if you change the layout, and try to
test it in the test field at the bottom the old layout is active - which
the leaves the test field for teasing the user.
i upgraded 8.04 to intrepid, and it seems like this since the last
upgrade today.
