For completeness, here's a screenshot showing the normal clock applet.
Here, the tray entry has the correct width.

Some other observations:
- width is not corrected if displayed time changes (like new minute value)
- switching the "display date" or "display seconds" checkboxes on/off in 
settings dialog doesn't fix it either
- switching "display temperature" on/off in time settings dialog fixes the 
width again.

This is with gnome-applets version 2.22.2-0ubuntu2 .
