I have started the gnome-appearance-properties several times (eight
times) but the gui does not show itself. The same goes for Firefox, by
the way (that's why I am now using SeaMonkey, instead).
I believe I found the reason why this is happening and the method to
manually resolve the problem:
Somehow, the process "gdm" is starting TWICE at boot. Once I killed one
of both processes, Ubuntu automatically logged me out and forced me into
the non-gui environment (other than gnome-terminal). I could login but
not return to the gui environment of Ubuntu. When I tried "gdm", Ubuntu
told me "gdm" was already started and could therefore not be started.
So then, I killed the remaining "gdm" process and typed "gdm" to get
back to the gui mode. This time it worked. I got back into the gui
environment. Furthermore, all programmes which were non-responsive
before, now were responding properly, again.
** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
