In my case, the bug was not in f-spot - it was related to glx and the PROPRIETARY graphic card driver. When I connected a second monitor to the notebook with an ati graphic card, glx did not start - even the fgl_glxgears did not work. When I disconnected the second monitor, glx was working and f-spot as well (after restarting X). When using the non-proprietary card driver, it worked with both monitors, but I could not get the setup working which I needed (two separate X-Servers). So the bug is caused by the PROPRIETARY ATI graphic card driver.
