Martin, on my box /usr/share/gconf/schemas/apps_nautilus_preferences.schemas
has that:

<owner>nautilus</owner>
<type>bool</type>
<default>true</default>
..."
ie: it's "true" by default. Unsetting it with gconf-editor (== reset to the
system value) confirms that
