Setting the status of this bug back to confirmed. The problem is that
"upgrade-manager -d" unintentionally switched our configurations to
launch various programs in-place of nautilus.

 I also do not believe that the package 'gnome-panel' is necessarily at
fault, but don't have a clue where the root is.
