Hello Adam, that's preety unusual. In fact, I've never seen this kind of behaviour in evolution unless in certain messages, but no complete system lockup (this makes me think of hardware error).
Adam, there used to exist a bug about evolution locking up when you open some message - it will lock even when you open it again with that message is selected - and the lockup will go away if you remove that message using some other mail client. But it was obsoleted - see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315344 Is this bug present in more than one machine?
