I have the same problem, but I don't think you expanded on it much. Because of the power manager for gnome isn't loading on startup, it causes a awkward delay in logging off or shutting down. However, if you goto change the settings for the power manager, it loads up and does it's job. I have had the battery on my laptop die without warning because the power manager ALSO controls that too.
