I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 (downloaded from ubuntu.com) on a desktop
computer, and while it seemed to go through installation without any
problems, this bug has come up. When I log in at startup, it gives me a
blank screen (just the default orange background color, with no images
or icons), and as soon as I move the mouse it bumps me back out to the
login screen. It will do this repeatedly until I give up and turn it
off. Just to be sure, I ran the system straight off the disc on a
different computer and it worked fine. The computer that had the
problem is an Emachines desktop with an AMD Athlon 64 processor (2.2.
GHz), 512 MB RAM, and a Radeon Xpress 200 graphics card. If it makes a
difference, the machine was originally built for Windows XP. I don't
know if there's any more information you need, but that's what I've got
for now.
