I am having a similar problem: newly installed ubuntu 8.10 alpha amd64. As soon as I start typing in the body of a new message either the composer window and the main Evolution window go grey and freeze, requiring me to force quit, or (more often) the app crashes and vanishes. I can receive mail via evolution, but have to use a webmail service to send emails. I have sent the crash report in /var/crash via apport.
