You have been subscribed to a public bug:
The number of workspace columns is lost (reverted to one) if the "Workspace
Switcher" is removed from the panel. Here's the steps to reproduce:
1. Add workspace switcher to panel (right click on pane > "Add to panel..." >
Workspace Switcher)
2. Raise the number of rows two (right click Workspace Switcher > Preferences >
Change "Show all workspaces in: X rows" to 2)
3. Remove Workspace Switcher (right click Workspace Switcher > "Remove From
Panel")
4. At this point you'll still have 2x2 workspaces. However, if you either
re-add the Workspace Switcher OR restart Ubuntu, it'll be reverted to a single
row (1x4 workspaces).
Bug is with Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04.1) and desktop effects are turned
off. -Damian
