After the usplash screen, I am greeted with the double drum tab of the login
GDM screen. I log in within a second from being able to type in my usr and pass
very quickly, but then I face a long wait. Longer than it should be.
Even in Windows Vista, after you log in, the desktop instantly appears.
In Mac OS X, it appears and then you log in, only to see it instantly
reappear. In short, other OSs have this right somehow.
For some reason there is loading to be done after logging in. Why can't
most of this loading be done while the usplash screen is going? I can't
stand misleading loading bars like the windows one in which you wait for
the loading bar, then wait for a please wait screen, then at times a
welcome screen. In ubuntu, the one loading bar in usplash should
encompass all loading absolutely possible before login. The windowing
system and GNOME, etc. can load in that, while settings and documents,
etc. load after login.
While it technically does not shave time off of boot up, it creates a
good impression. Also, loading bars are meant to show progress.
Misleading ones are extremely annoying and are increasingly obvious as
people realize they must wait for other loading screens.
usplash is also prettier than the beige screen one must look at :)
