I agree it's a xorg bug - but why xrandr tool works (is able to switch the modes even though it shows apparently bad sync values) and gui tool crashes?
If the capplet simply calls xrandr there should be no problem - and apparently is. What means a workaround for you? Simply calling xrandr with proper arguments should be no workaround... If you can arrange the code this way it would be great, thanks! (and thus resapplet could work properly too) I tried to confirm the bug today (after dist-upgrade of course) and it still exists. Do you want me to send you some strace output or set core limit and send you a stack backtrace?
