I upgraded from Hardy when Intrepid was in beta, maybe it is a carry
over from that?

I just found the problem. Not the root cause, but the specific problem
when it doesn't work.

When the .htaccess file is on my desktop, its mime-type is: "plain text
document (text/plain)". Thus, when I double-click it, gEdit opens it.

Yet an .htaccess file uploaded to an FTP server has a mime-type of
"unknown (application/octet-stream)". Thus, when I double-click it, this
error appears:

Could not display "ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/folder/.htaccess".
There is no application installed for this file type

My apologies for not stating this earlier, it looks like I only receive
this error over FTP and not locally on my desktop. I edited the 'Could
not display' part of my bug above because it contained sensitive
information about my server, not realizing I was taking important
information out.
