What driver are you using? I've encountered the same issue on my laptop with xserver-xorg-driver-i810 while my desktop with xserver-xorg-driver- ati works fine. If you are using i810-driver, this bug may be a duplication of #6494 (xserver-xorg-driver-i810 Output too bright).
