I would expect it to be oriented the way normal text is always oriented, which, 
in order to fit it on a vertical panel, would presumably entail formatting the 
date and time in columnar form, something like:

Jul 25
2008
2:33 PM

(Referrring to my screenshot) I notice that the application icons are
oriented normally (i.e. the "K" in Kile and the "?" for help are both
upright, not lying on their right sides, so why should the date and time
text be turned on it's side?
