I went through all the session options (except remote), and I had the
same problem for all of the standard ones. Failsafe GNOME logged in
okay, but there were no buttons or menus anywhere on the desktop, and
I'm pretty sure I did see those there when I tried running Ubuntu on a
different machine. Failsafe Terminal worked fine as well, but that
doesn't help much when I'm trying to use Ubuntu as a Windows replacement
for someone who knows very little about computers.
