Did a bit more digging.  This is an open report from a few years ago.  
Personally it's a bit irksome that it hasn't been dealt with -- especially 
since using metacity it is impossible to do a presentation on a second head in 
GNOME - in effect making GNOME unusable for a dual-head presentation setup.  In 
GNOME it is bug 145503 and from there a link exists for a patch that a guy 
applies up through FC5 to correct the behavior.  I am not at a place to try the 
patch - nor do I know how to extract it from an .rpm source file.  The link is:

Is there any hope of such a patch - like in multiverse as maybe a 
metacity-xinerama package?  This would be very helpful to laptop users like
