@robert: can you run the procedure in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and try to get a backtrace. Also, a copy of your .xsession-errors log should be attached to this bug report. That will greatly help in getting this fixed.
When it locks up, do you have to do a hard power off or does it become usable after a few minutes? Is this happening in a virtual machine or on a hardware computer system?
