Keep in mind, this appears to be an initial state problem after an install. It is corrected just by *visiting* the spell check preference in Evolution one time. Thereafter all is well and the problem does not recur. More background: 32 bit system was an upgrade. 64 bit system was a fresh install. Also -- Evolution on the 64 bit system was initialized from a backup of Evolution on 32 bit system. That backup was created after the upgrade, but before I discovered the solution.
