OK, this is strange. I can now no longer reproduce the problem. After capturing info lat night, I left the machine running over night with all the windows open. Tried to copy to the automount Nautilus window and it worked.
Unplugged the usb drive, plugged it back in. Would not automount. Rebooted. Automounted disk fine. But now I can write to the disk.
