Using Gutsy on a 1Gbyte 600 Mhz PIII, tons of disk space, pretty virgin
install (had to hand-modify some files to get wireless working, also
stopped the powerdown (sp?) daemon from running since this machine
doesn't do CPU speed changes) and up-to-date patches.
As the original user I start up the GUI adduser (er..."Users and
Groups") dialog from the System/Administration menu. Add a user
normally, say "mynewuser".
Logout as original user.
Login as mynewuser.
Display almost immediately shows top and bottom icon bars with minimal
icons on them with blank (beige-like) screen background). Icon bars then
disappear as screen is overwritten with the standard screen background
(dark brown with light swirls). Seemingly long delay later dark icon
bars reappear.
Attempt to do just about anything and get total system lockup requiring
manual hard reset - telnets into box also do not work at this point.
Have tried to start up a terminal right away and type in, for example,
"ps -ef". Able to get SOME "ps" output before total lockup. If I have an
active telnet session inbound from another PC that sessions also is
locked.
The original user can use this machine "normally" (like right now with
this bug report). Using any other secondary user added as noted above
causes a total lockup, however.
** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Incomplete
