Errr, that cleared up when i used 'Ctrl -' a few times. I looked up the dpkg help by typing dpkg --help and still don't kow what it did, lol, but at least its updating happily so i'm not worried. The last line in the help file said Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management. which might be worth trying from the terminal window, if you have further problems.
