Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
Nautilus allows you to mount archives such as tar and iso files.
However, once you mount an archive and then navigated to that archives
file system, you can't then copy that archive's file system's folders
and files to another destination as you would normally be able to do
from a mounted external hard drive for example.
Details:
Because I don't like using the command line to extract tar files, and
because File-roller takes forever to read and then extract a 67gig tar
file, I decided to mount that tar file to the file system, and then copy
its contents to another destination. However, when I tried to copy the
folders and files (in the mounted archive using nautilus -- to a regular
file system location), I received this error:
"There was an error copying the file into /home/username/customfolder/ .
. . File doesn't exist"
Replicate:
To replicate this problem, mount a tar file that contains a folder
hierarchy with files at various levels in that hierarchy. Here's what I
did:
Using nautilus, I right-clicked a 67gig tar file and selected "Open with
Archive Mounter". Then I navigated to that mounted tar archive by
selecting Places > Computer (in Ubuntu 8.10 (64 bit)) and then I
selecting the mounted tar (which was listed in the left panel). Nautilus
displayed the root directory of the archive.
Next, I hit ctrl-a to select all files and folders in the mounted
archive, and then I right-clicked on one of the highlighted
files/folders and then select "Copy" from the context menu.
After this, I navigated to a desired destination folder using nautilus,
and then I right-clicked in the white space (in the right pane of the
nautilus window) and then click "Paste" from the context menu.
Then I received the following error:
"There was an error copying the file into /home/username/customfolder/ .
. . File doesn't exist"
Thoughts:
If the archive is truly mounted, Nautilus should allow you to treat the
contents of the archive like any other mounted media (such as an
external hard drive). You should be able to copy and paste the contents
to a desired destination without receiving the error mentioned above.
However, for some reason, since the file is actually contained in an
archive (despite that the archive is mounted), nautilus doesn't think
the file exists. But since it is mounted, nautilus should transparently
understand how to treat the archive's contents as files and folders and
therefore NOT output an error that "File doesn't exist"
