Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm
I believe the bug is in the gdm package, but it could be pango and/or fontconfig (see attached DEBUG logs for gdm). ---- $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release: 8.04 ---- $ apt-cache policy gdm gdm: Installed: 2.20.7-0ubuntu1.1 Candidate: 2.20.7-0ubuntu1.1 Version table: *** 2.20.7-0ubuntu1.1 0 500 http://debian.akamai.com hardy-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.20.5-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://debian.akamai.com hardy/main Packages ---- I recently (12/12/2008) upgraded from 07.10 to 08.04. Prior to the upgrade, gdm was working correctly. After the upgrade, gdm started correctly following the first reboot into 08.04. At some point over the next week, I used update-manager to upgrade a small number of packages, and then rebooted the machine as instructed by update-manager. After this reboot, gdm would not start. An error dialog appears, but I cannot read it ... the text is displayed as character sized rectangles. I eventually ran gdm with debug logging enabled, and I am attaching the relevant portions of messages and syslog. The log appears to indicate that there is a problem with pango and/or font config. It also indicates that the error dialog is telling me that it cannot start the greeter. I can use startx from the command line. I am also able to run xdm, and so can use a graphical login. The pango problem indicated in the log file for gdm does not appear to effect either the gnome desktop or the xfce desktop. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gdm fails to launch gdmgreeter and gdmlogin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
