Another "Me too." I'm using Spamassassin and the error started after upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. It appears the spam filter might still be running, despite the status bar messages (ex: the status bar shows a "progress indicator" when memorizing new 'Junk').
My current work-a-round (to avoid status bar messages, even if they are bogus. . .and I don't know the answer to that), is to open a terminal and restart the Spamassassin daemon (sudo /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart).
