** Description changed:

I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till
2 days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started.
I have checked in the forums and confirm that:
dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.*

The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time
(around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were
no [OK] for the hal daemon.

Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof
  hal returns no pids.

- P.S: Also, my eth0 is not detected. I am not able to use internet to
- post the logs from there. If information is provided regarding how to
- enable network from text mode, it will be fine to give more details from
- linux system. Currently I have to reboot the system to post the bugs.
+ --
+ Now I have upgraded my dist by dist-upgrade, and now hal daemon is started
correctly. But still, the gdmgreeter is not started. The gdmgreeter is
restarted repeatedly without showing the login screen.
+ I could see the gdmgreeter pid changing in process status, implying that a
new gdmgreeter is being started again repeatedly. I even tried restarting gdm
manually, but with no use:
+
+ If any other details are needed regarding this, I will provide it.

  Thanks,
  Rajesh.S
