I also got this problem (internal mic doesn't work) with my soundcard.
As I do not have an external mic, I don't know if that works.

 Info:
- Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid, all repositories enabled
- laptop: Asus A8Jc H023H
- Soundcard:
>cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Analog Devices AD1986A
Codec: Motorola Si3054
>lspci|grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)
- Both with PulseAudio and Alsa
- Adding 'options snd-hda-intel fix_position=1 model=3stack' to
/etc/modprobes.d/alsa-base enabled mic, but all output didn't work

- I use the Sound Recorder (Applications > Sound & Video > Sound Recorder) to
see if the mic works
- I use the 'Test' sound from System > Preferences > Sound

Hopefully, this bug can be fixed!
