I was using totem-gstreamer (-xine not installed). gstreamer properties was set to Autodetect for output and ALSA for input.
with the USB camera selected as soundcard, totem and gxine both play audio correctly (with esd running and not running, and Autodetect in the settings.) I'm afraid I can't repeat this bug, presumably because there is only one 'first time'. I run freenx quite often and this starts the ESD (and nxesd) process: could these have caused a conflict? I can try to repeat if you can give further instructions.
