Thanks Daniel, disabling the timer-based scheduling (tsched=0) fixed it for me!
>From a PA perspective I had to manually do - install vlc-plugin-pulse - configure VLC sound output to "Pulse audio output" - disabling the timer-based scheduling (tsched=0) to get a glitch-free sound I guess those settings should be the defaults for Ubuntu installations.
