I'm fairly certain now that it is a hardware problem. Since underclocking my system by lowering the FSB speed to the next lower setting, I have had absolutely no crashes or freezes. Prior to that, random programs, including gnome-panel were frequently segfaulting. No temperature problems that I can see and memtest says the RAM is OK. Go figure.
