I forgot one additional note: the error message you get in .xsession-errors is nice but unexplicative: it explains you that the error is due to unescaped entities "at line XYZ", but it doesn't state IN WHICH FILE it has found errors! I could only find this by searching with Google and finding other people who had had the problem. Gnome-panel should always log the name of the file that is causing an error or warning...
