by adding the brightness control to the top panel, when trying to
adjust the brightness the sliding bar doesn't move, and then the whole
machine hangs. hard reset has been necessary. normal keyboard controlled
brightness works fine (function +home or function+end) using gnome
2.24.1 and ubuntu 8.10
