Private bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I just upgraded my desktop from Intrepid to Jaunty, and on the first
reboot after upgrading, I get a black screen with a gtk dialog saying
"The greeter application appears to be crashing. Using a different
one."

If I press OK there it apparently tries to start again but then the
dialog comes back.

/var/log/daemon contains

Feb 19 18:12:22 grace gdm[7222]: Mount of private directory return code [0]
