In Gnome Desktop v. 2.24.1 (Ubuntu 8.10), build date: 10/24/2008, as
more search options are selected, the "Search for Files" window grows
beyond the usable screen bounds, making the Help, Close and Find buttons
inaccessible, and/or the title bar becomes inaccessible, making it
difficult or impossible to close the window.

When Search for Files is started from the top panel "Places" menu, its
title bar usually appears just below the panel at the top of the screen.
The bottom edge of the window may be somewhere in the middle of the
screen, or just above the lower panel, depending on its size when it was
last closed. If one clicks on the "> Select more options" link and then
repeatedly clicks on the "+Add" buttons, the window grows upward and
downward until the title bar hits the top panel, and continues to grow
underneath the bottom panel, covering up the "Help", "Close" and "Find"
buttons. By clicking on the "-Remove" buttons, the options can be
removed, but the now oversized window doesn't shrink, staying beyond the
lower bounds of the screen. With many options activated, the "Seach
results" pane is pushed below the lower screen bounds and, so, even if
one could launch a search, the results would be invisible.

If one attempts to use Compiz to resize the window to make the bottom
buttons accessible by dragging its corners, one can put the title bar
under the top panel, making it inaccessible as well, so it is difficult
-- or impossible -- to close the window without restarting the Gnome
session.

The user interface of the Search for Files utility should be entirely
redesigned so that the window doesn't grow bigger as more or fewer
features are selected; a scroll bar should appear at the right side so
one can scroll up and down to view the settings and results, or
implement a tabbed scheme so that the settings are on another tab
separate from the search results pane. Also, it should be made
impossible to put the title bar under a screen feature such that it
would become inaccessible for window resizing or window closure. This
basic utility needs be made to work properly on screens as small as
640x480 (standard VGA resolution). N.B., my screen size in this
instance is 1024x768.

This is a usability issue. It may be related to Bug #122505 reported by
David Prieto on 2007-06-27.
