Example situation: disconnected from VPN while some shares were still mounted,
or resumed from standby attached to another network. Just trying to open a
nautilus window (not necessarily to a path within the unavailable network
locations) will hang that every instance of nautilus, desktop included. Trying
to unmount the locations via terminal will hang the terminal for some minutes
(depending on the number of unreachable shares etc), with smb timeouts
occasionally appearing.
This issue is very annoying for computers traveling a lot and containing shares
in fstab for shares on various networks.
There should either be a definable timeout option or the system should give up
sooner on unavailable locations.

** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
