Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
The default setting for what to do when lid is closed while on AC in
gnome-power-manager is "blank screen." Leaving a laptop closed for a
long period of time builds up heat and can damage the screen.
Suspend/resume is very fast and should be the default.
Similarly, the default for low power is to shutdown. It should be to
suspend, or arguably to hibernate. Suspend draws very little power and
the battery can last a long time while suspended. This option prevents
the user from losing any work. In the worst case power is lost and later
they have to cold boot the machine anyway.
I can't remember if I changed the default for when laptop lid is closed
while on battery, but if it's not suspend it should be as well. It's
standard behavior on Windows and OS X.
I am aware that for some machines suspend is broken. Users with that
problem can change the setting easily. The defaults should assume non-
buggy-drivers and do the right thing. Any events related to lid closing
can only happen on laptops where saving power is ideal.
