Reopened. Albeit my previous comment has a workaround to fix this issue,
IMHO the Autohinter should be enabled by default in Jaunty, in order to
get consistency in the hinting options on
System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts->Details... Having "Full Hinting"
worse looking than "Slight Hinting" is not consistent.
** Changed in: fontconfig (Ubuntu)
Status: Invalid => New
** Changed in: libgnome (Ubuntu)
Status: Invalid => New
** Summary changed:
- Font hinting in Jaunty is completely wrong
+ Autohinter should be enabled by default in Jaunty to avoid font rendering
inconsistencies
** Description changed:
Binary package hint: fontconfig
After upgrading my Intrepid to Jaunty Beta, I realized that the font
rendering is wrong:
1. Go to System->Preferences->Appearance
2. Go to Fonts tab
3. Click on Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)
4. Click on Details...
5. Now try changing the Hinting value
Result:
+ ---------
+ NONE OR SLIGHT HINTING IS BETTER LOOKING THAN MEDIUM OR FULL HINTING, which
is obviously incorrect.

+ To resolve this issue:
+ --------------------------
+ Autohinter should be enabled by default in Jaunty. This is how I can do it by
hand after Jaunty installation:
+
+ $ cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
+ $ sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-autohint.conf .
+ $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config
+ 1. How should fonts be tuned for the screen? » Autohinter
+ 2. Enable subpixel rendering of text? » Always
+ 3. Enable default «bitmapped» fonts? » No
